The Ghost in the Machine

Unique art is hard to find. Every artist is unique in their own way but, finding something that stands out is difficult. About a year ago a friend recommended that I check out Erika Iris Simmons Her work truly stood out to me. I found myself studying each and every picture and trying to figure out ‘how’d she do that?’. Erika takes tapes, film, and things most people might just throw away and she creates art using the medium itself to form the creation. I have attached photos below of some of her art, including one of my favorite piece of hers: Beethoven. It’s remarkable. But what I find most interesting is, on her flicker page here she allows us to see a bit of the progression of the work. I think the pictures showing the development of the piece is what make the final image seem that much more amazing. I find seeing all the detail and work that goes into just one work of art inspiring. She seems to focus on, but is not limited to, pop icons including Michael Jackson, Audrey Hepburn, Bob Marley, and Fernando Valenzuela(made out of a baseball) and each is made using some unusual, but appropriate, materials. I like to create pop art- canvas and acrylic. It’s a Andy Warhol influenced style but more subdued. It’s created by starting off with a photograph that is then traced and transfered onto a canvas. I have painted friends and also have painted people that I find interesting or entertaining. Below are my favorites. A few more are listed on etsy.com here for sale.

I’m happy to be able to show off more art from another professional video game artist. Andy Murray, currently at Tencent Boston has worked with Wizards of the Coast, Blizzard Upper Deck, and Sony Online Entertainment. Beautiful Grim is a site created for a friend of mine, Cat, who was diagnosed with breast cancer at the tender age of 25. Her husband, an artist himself, created the site for Cat in an effort to raise some money to help with the medical costs. Interestingly, a large number of the artists who contributed are from the video game industry, including many from Bioware-Mythic. I want to encourage all of you to go to this site and take a look. The art he has collected is brilliant. I’ve never seen so many interpretations of one simple phrases – Beautiful Grim. I’ve posted a couple here that stood out to me just to show an example of the wide assortment that can be seen on his site. I hope you enjoy.

I am fire and I am flame,
Passion with a twist of pain.

I am innocence, prim and neat;
The devil never looked so sweet.

I am beauty bloomed within,

Stop Motion

This is my first stop motion attempt. It took about four days to complete with over 350 pictures taken. The most tedious part was the editing. Loading all the pictures in all at once did not give me the quick, desired result I’d hoped for. Mac’s are not designed for this type of work so I had to edit each picture making it one tenth a second and adjusting it to fit into the frame properly. The video is 20 seconds long but the actual footage is only 12. I was blown away at how much effort went into those few little moments. I learned quickly that I needed something to hold the camera still. I did my best to keep each shot looking similar but having a tripod or something to mount the camera on would have made things smoother. Also, I needed a lot more pictures, probably about 11 or 12 per second. In short, a lot of lessons were learned and I hope to do this again but, in much better quality.
